Our Steps

Omega-3 vs. Omega-3-6-9

Sometimes less is more. Most of our diets do not include enough cold water fish which is high in Omega-3. However, our modern diets have more than enough Omega-6 and Omega-9. We get Omega-6 from most vegetable oils. Omega-9 is not an essential fatty acid and is produced by our bodies. Omega-9 is found in animal fat, vegetable oil and olive oil.

So, why are supplements advertising Omega-3-6-9 when our diets already have an abundant supply of Omega-6-9? Because of marketing! They don't care about your health; they care about their sales.  It looks like you are getting more. The reality is that supplements should only be used when you can't easily get what you need from the food you eat. Also, Omega-6 is shown to increase inflammation, while Omega-3 reduces inflammation.

Most of our bodies have 16 to 25 times the amount of Omega-6 compared to Omega-3, however, most research shows the amounts should be equal.

We recommend increasing Omega-3 supplements while reducing the amount of vegetable oils and animal fats. Only when the balance between Omega-3 and Omege-6 is achieved will the full benefits of Omega-3 supplements be realized.

What is Omega-3?
Omega-3 is the name for three types of fatty acids, ALA, EPA, and DHA. ALA can be gotten from plant oils like those from flax seed. The other two, EPA and DHA are found primarily in Marine oils found in coldwater fish or marine algae.
